If I go off Plaquenil for 3 days or more I break out in my original symptom of huge hot welting hives from head to toe and fatigue like I've been hit by a Mack truck. I'm allergic to all NSAID's so I've only been able to take the narcotic pain meds, so I figure that I don't get the runs from the Plaquenil becuase the of the constipating effect. Plaquenil has helped me on many levels on many days. I think, for me, anyway, the depression and anxiety I often feel is due to the autoimmune issues/sjogrens. I have not noticed an increase in depression/anxiety since being on the plaquenil but that is just me. I have only been on it for about a year now. Plaquenil is a slow-acting drug, meaning that it can take up to 6 months to experience the full benefits of this medication, but it is possible for symptoms to improve in as few as 1 or 2 months. Plaquenil and other antimalarials are the key to controlling lupus long-term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives.
