It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Malaria is spread by mosquitoes, which transmit the parasites that cause the infection, usually in tropical and subtropical parts of the world.

Vision loss typically is permanent, with little significant improvement, and may continue to progress even years after drug cessation. Previous Plaquenil Testing Guidelines In 2002, the American Academy of Ophthalmology AAO established ocular examination guidelines for screening patients on Plaquenil therapy. Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is an antimalarial agent used for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune, inflammatory and dermatologic conditions, with less toxic effects than chloroquine. For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

  7. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, which are used to decrease inflammation, pain and joint damage. While today it is used to treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, it was originally used as an anti-malaria drug.

Jan 05, 2020 In the United States, hydroxychloroquine is most often used for its anti-inflammatory effects in rheumatology and dermatology. Its toxic effects on the retina are seen in the macula. While early toxicity may be asymtomatic, patients with more advanced stage of toxicity may complain of color vision changes or paracentral scotomas. It has become fairly common practice for most rheumatologists to recommend that patients being treated with hydroxychloroquine be seen for formal visual field evaluation once or twice a year to monitor for retinal toxicity. The previous AAO guideline recommended screening every 12 months. Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus.

Chloroquine and primaquine inhibition of rat liver cell-free. Chloroquine and primaquine inhibited polypeptide formation directed by poly U and random poly A,G,U in a rat liver cell-free system. It was necessary to preincubate the drug and polynucleotide before addition to the cell-free system to observe this inhibition.
