Rashes may occur in up to 10% of patients, most commonly morbilliform or psoriasiform. Note that adverse cutaneous reactions to hydroxychloroquine are reported to affect more than 30% of patients with dermatomyositis, compared to a lower risk of rash in patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Hi There, Ok, I just started taking Plaquenil 7 days ago and I just realized I am really really itchy. I looked down at my arms and I have red and white blotchy areas on my forarms. I am starting to itch in my scalp, back, stomach, face and arms now. I think this rash is just starting, so I don't know if it will An increased incidence of cutaneous reactions to hydroxychloroquine has been postulated to occur in patients with dermatomyositis. OBJECTIVE To determine if adverse cutaneous eruptions due to hydroxychloroquine are more common in patients with dermatomyositis than in those with cutaneous lupus erythematosus.

  4. My doctor said it was photodermatitis and caused from a sensitivity to the sun caused by the plaquenil. I am having a problem with that explanation as I haven't been in the sun in a few weeks and I am still getting the rash although it isn't blistery or as bad as it was.

Re Plaquenil and Sun Exposure Reply #13 on June 12, 2011, AM After a long dark winter of seeing no sun, I finally went into the sun for an hour, early in the morning, and over the next day, developed a red raised rash on all exposed parts, a rash that lasted for several weeks. Aug 26, 2013 Yes. Hair bleaching, hair loss, skin pigmentation, rash and itching are recognized skin adverse reactions of plaquenil hydroxychloroquine. These reactions tend to be worse if a patient is taking other medications that have similar skin toxicity. Please consult a dermatologist to ensure skin lesions are not psoriatic because Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine use needs special precautions in. I wonder if the commencement of the skin rashes and itching is related in some way to this decreased effectiveness of the medication too. So far from the other posts it may seems that Plaquenil may be somehow associated with skin rash that looks like small hives and patchy itchiness.
