Cutaneous lupus erythematosus CLE is the second most common presenting symptom of autoimmune lupus erythematosus LE. Lesions precede the onset of systemic symptoms in 25 percent of patients, many of whom present to dermatologists for their initial evaluation.1 Prompt diagnosis of CLE requires a thorough understanding of the cutaneous manifestations and clinical spectrum of lupus. Most of the patients described were African or of African descent with dark skin who had been exposed to the sun. One was a Hispanic patient who developed vitiligo-like skin depigmentation after 1 month of chloroquine therapy for cutaneous lupus erythematosus. The skin rapidly repigmented after discontinuation of chloroquine therapy. Today’s AMs are hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil®, chloroquine Aralen®, and quinacrine Atabrine®. Quinacrine is no longer marketed in the U. S.; it can be dispensed by a compounding pharmacy, although insurance companies may not pay for it. The antimalarial quinine was first used to treat cutaneous lupus in 1834.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend against treatment of malaria with chloroquine alone due to more effective combinations. In areas where resistance is present, other antimalarials, such as mefloquine or atovaquone, may be used instead.

Plaquenil and weight gain - My weight gain is from the steroids I'm certain and not the Plaquenil. Are you on anything else to treat your lupus other than the Plaquenil? If you're on steroids that can be whats causing you to gain weight. I can't offer any advice on losing the weight if you come off the Plaquenil.
