It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Nov 12, 2009 Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up. Plaquenil is prescribed as a disease-modifier, in other words, to decrease pain, decrease swelling, and prevent joint damage and disability. It is not known how Plaquenil works but researchers believe that Plaquenil interferes with communication between cells within the immune system. Ultimately, it is thought to block proinflammatory. My Neurologist then advised me to come off Plaquenil as he said it was such a nasty drug! No communication between the pair of them within the same hospital, where I also work ironically! Within a few weeks of coming off Plaquenil I was in a massive, and I do mean MASSIVE relapse, which took ages to get over.

For example, it may be combined with an antibiotic to treat chronic Q-fever, which humans usually catch from farm animals or raw milk. Plaquenil is used to treat other types of infections too.

Aug 26, 2016 My new rheumy, after running a trillion tests, has said that if it weren't for my previous rheumy's test results, he would say I did not have lupus. So, I asked about coming off of plaquenil. He said that I could stop plaquenil cold turkey. It slowly decreases effectiveness in the body. Hydroxychloroquine is plaquenil, which can cause eye problems it's uncommon to have eye symptoms coming off of the medication ask your doctor for evaluation of other causes of eye discomfort and vision changes I was sent to the allergy clinic but they were totally bemused as the only ingredients that were common in both types of medication were present in other meds I take without any problems. I'm really struggling with coping with it at the moment - I've had to come off plaquenil recently as it was making this worse and upsetting my stomach so badly.
